2009 Spring Schedule

March


7th - Redwood grove hike.  Sorrel and trilliums in bloom, redcoat lichens. Moderate 5 mile round trip, creek crossing.


14th - VanArsdale canyon hike.  A scenic hike in watershed, past springs and vernal pools.  Moderate 5.5 mile r/t with 1,100 ‘ elevation gain.

 

21st - Riparian area walk.  Newts, turtles, birds, and spring wild flowers. Easy 3 mile r/t along creek.

 

28th - Animal tracks.  Hike with certified tracker identifying signs of wildlife.  Easy, 4 mile r/t with some elevation gain.

April


4th - Walker lake boundary hike.  Through the redwoods and beyond to the lake spillway.  Moderate 6 mile r/t, creek crossing.

 

11th - Valley meadows walk.  Wet meadows, poppy fields, bay and oaks. Easy 2.5 mile r/t.


18th - Vernal pools hike.  Laughlin ridge watershed pools, springs.  Hike climbs 1,000’ over 3 miles.  Moderate 6 mile r/t.


25th - Turtle pond wildflower  identify walk.  Easy and under a mile. Canyon barn trail walk.  After lunch join in on a 2nd walk.  Easy 3 mile r/t, some elevation gain.

May


2nd - Bird watching walk in oak woodlands, stream riparian areas.  Easy 3.5 mile r/t with some elevation gain. Early start time: 8:30am

 

9th - White deer lake hike.  Wild flower meadows, oak woodlands around lake. Hugh boulders with great colorations, shiny mica.  Moderate 5 mile r/t with Some elevation gain.


16th - Kids nature scavenger hunt.  Identifying wild animal signs, collecting bones, feathers, and stuff.  Easy 4 mile r/t with some elevation gain.


23rd - Laughlin ridge traverse.  Views in all directions from the summit (3,215’). Hike starts (car pool) from summit.  Over 2,000’ descent.  Moderate 5.5 mile r/t Steep in sections.

 

30th - Lilies of the field walk.  Glorious wildflower walk along dirt roads and thru open meadows.  Easy 4 mile r/t.

 

June


6th - Indian springs hike.  Canyon hike to ridge top with views of Eagle peak. Moderate 6 mile r/t with 600’ elevation gain.


13th - Bobcat creek hike.  Laughlin watershed territorial views.  Elevation gain 1,100’.  Moderate 6.5 mile r/t.

...........Enjoy Your Walk!......Be Prepared......

Knowledgeable naturalists, herbalists, birders, and animal trackers are along on most trips.
Start time is 10 am. except when noted.  Outing duration will vary from 3 to 6 hours.  Children 10 and older are welcome.  Each trip registration limit is 12 persons.
Proper footwear is essential; early spring trips can be muddy good fun, and some have creek crossings.
Wear appropriate (layered) clothing. Protect yourself from sun, rain, mosquitoes, ticks, and poison oak.  In your pack carry water and energy snacks.  You may also want to bring your camera, binoculars, magnifier, and field guide.

 

PARTICIPANTS ARE ASKED TO SIGN A LIABILITY WAIVER.
